Our Projects are Growing

  • Learning and Sharing Space

We are currently working with a small area of Jinibara Country, on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, to use as a community learning and sharing space. We are in the process of preparing and cleaning up the site, and over the coming months will have a community greenhouse, along with a yarning space and meeting area ready to go. In the coming years we will have planted out many different native foods and medicines to use in our work. All First Nations people are welcome to come and take cuttings, seeds, and have a yarn.

This space is currently being used as a explorative site for inter-cultural ways to listen, learn and co-design with Country. We are grateful for the support of urban architectural firm Urbis, who have been supporting us in this process.

If you would like to volunteer with weeding, planting, or would just like to come for a cuppa, get in touch.

  • Grow Share Yarns

We support and facilitate in-person gatherings for First Nations people and their families to connect around food and medicine growing, swap seeds and plant resources, share stories, and sit, talk and taste together by the fire.

Since 2021, Grow Share Yarns have been held on Yugarra Country at Northey Street City Farm, and with additional support from the Farm.

If you would like more information, or would be interested in holding a Grow Share Yarn in your area, send us an email.

  • Blakyard Blitz

    Blak Yard Blitz

We are currently seeking funding to run our Blak Yard Blitz program—where First Nations people can learn and share around food growing, and food systems in their own backyards, and with other First Nations people. Think Permablitz, mob style :)

Now in its development stage, we are looking to increase our capacity to organise and run these initiatives across South East Queensland.

Reach out if you’d like to support this work, and be a part of the Blak Yard Blitz community as it starts to take shape.

  • Culturally Centred Learning Programs

As part of our ongoing work and research, we are looking to develop culturally centred learning programs that support the growth and capacity of urban-based Indigenous food knowledges, systems and practices, by and for First Nations people and their families.

Taking inspiration from Permaculture Design Courses, Syntropic Agriculture, and other regenerative frameworks that are suited for small-scale urban landscapes, we are seeking to bring our cultural perspectives, protocols, and ways of knowing, being and doing to these spaces, in ways that are relevant and generative for our mob.

We are currently seeking funding to co-develop these programs—either accredited or non-accredited, with people and communities. If you would like to support or be involved in this work, please be in touch via email, or click the donate button below.

  • Growing on Country - Online Course

With support from Walking Story, Northey Street City Farm, Permaculture Australia and Bank Australia, in 2024 we will launch Growing on Country—an online protocols and perspectives course, developed entirely by First Nations people, for non-Indigenous people growing or gardening on unceded land. The course provides a practical and accessible learning opportunity for those wanting to be a more respectful and generative ally when growing on Country.

All proceeds from the course go directly to Yuruwan, and help us support the work that we do for people and communities.

  • Blak Seeds Online Community

We manage an online space for First Nations people to share and connect around urban food growing. If you are a First Nations person from Australia and would like to join, click on the button below and answer the required questions.
